Sandra Bullock makes history

And the award goes to ... Sandra Bullock, for making history as the first A-list actress to push a movie past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office.


Her latest movie, “The Blind Side,” has been a steady little engine that could, grossing $208.5 million domestically since its November 20 debut, according to the trade publication Variety.
And it looks like it still has room to grow.

“[W]e’re not even done,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman told the trade magazine. “I think ‘Blind Side’ has another $30 million left." (Warner Bros., like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)

The Bullock-led drama is a box office draw that other top actresses like Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon and Julia Roberts haven’t been able to pull off.

Streep’s big hits, “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia,” both earned less than $150 million domestically, and Roberts’s “Erin Brockovich” grossed $125.6 million domestically in 2000.

While 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” earned a remarkable $241.1 million domestically, it was an indie film led by the then-unknown Nia Vardalos.

In total, Bullock’s oeuvre has earned more than $1.72 billion at the domestic box office, according to Variety, which is none too shabby in comparison to her peers: Julia Roberts’s total career gross is $2.31 billion, Streep's is $1.54 billion  and Jolie's is $1.44 billion.
