Smokers in audience prompt Spears to interrupt Vancouver concert

Where there's smoke, there's . . . well, there's no Britney Spears. The 27-year-old pop star left the stage for about 30 minutes during a concert on Wednesday night in Vancouver, apparently because of smoke in the audience -- although no one has confirmed that tobacco was the culprit.

As reported in the Vancouver Sun, Spears' concert was halted about 15 minutes into her performance, and an announcer admonished concertgoers to put out their cigarettes. Some audience members grew impatient while waiting for Spears and her troupe to return to the stage, the Sun reported.

After she returned and ended the show, Spears told the crowd, "Don't smoke weed."

Spears' publicist, Holly Shakoor, issued a statement apologizing to fans about the delay. The statement said "crew members above the stage became ill due to a ventilation issue."

Spears' "Circus" tour of the United States, Canada and England launched on March 3 in New Orleans. Her father and attorneys are exploring the possibility of expanding the tour to include more shows in Europe and Australia.

Miley Cyrus Says Future Of 'Hannah Montana' Is 'Not Really Up To Me'

With "Hannah Montana: The Movie" hitting theaters Friday, many fans are wondering if the show will continue beyond its current third season. Star Miley Cyrus has mixed feelings, wanting to stick with "Hannah" and also hoping to move on to new, edgier projects.

"I would love for Hannah Montana to keep [going and] hopefully do another season," she told MTV News. "But it's not really up to me. Everyone kind of puts it on my shoulders, but at the end ... it's up to Disney and what they want to do with the show."

Until she knows her fate as the blond-wigged pop star, Cyrus does know that this summer she'll be gearing up to start work on, "The Last Song." "I'm doing a movie this summer with Nicholas Sparks," she said of the film, adding, "It's more of an edgy role."

Although Cyrus does feel the urge to grow up on the big screen, she doesn't want to let her work get so far removed from who she is in real life that she loses her faith. "I want to play edgy roles, but I think that my faith is obviously very important to me, so there's a way of doing that," she said. "Then also being the person that you want to be and not letting your roles take over your life, and I don't want to do anything wrong with my roles, because it's a job."

Cyrus hopes that as she grows as a person and a performer, she can follow in the path of another former Disney actress: Jodie Foster. "She's actually one of the nicest people, so if I was gonna go after anyone, it might be Jodie Foster," she said. "She's so nice, and me and her talk a lot, and she's almost like a mentor to me, so that would be someone that I would look up to."

Black Eyed Peas score first No. 1 on Hot 100

The Black Eyed Peas are set to log their first No. 1 single in the United States when Billboard issues its Hot 100 chart on Thursday.

"Boom Boom Pow" -- the first single from their upcoming fifth studio album "The E.N.D." -- sold 465,000 downloads last week, setting a new record for best single-week and debut download totals by a group. It ranked at No. 39 on the previous chart.

The group's prior best showing on the Hot 100 was a No. 3 peak for both Grammy-winning tunes "Don't Phunk With My Heart" and "My Humps" in 2005.

Coldplay had set the weekly digital sales record for a group when "Viva La Vida" moved 253,000 the week in June 2008. Maroon 5 held the mark for most downloads in a debut week when "Makes Me Wonder" opened with 244,000 in May 2007. The overall record for both categories was established by Flo Rida in February when "Right Round" debuted with 636,000 downloads.

"The E.N.D." will be released on June 9 via Interscope Records. It marks the band's first album of new material since 2005's "Monkey Business," which sold more than nine million copies worldwide, the label said.

Simpsons postage stamps ready

"Simpsons" fans can get the first peek at stamps featuring Homer, Marge & Co. -- and vote for their favorite -- when the U.S. Postal Service unveils the designs Thursday morning.

The stamps will be available nationwide on May 7.

"This is the biggest and most adhesive honor 'The Simpsons' has ever received," said creator and executive producer Matt Groening.

Executive producer James Brooks quipped, "We are emotionally moved by the Post Office Department's selecting us rather than making the lazy choice of someone who has benefited society."

The Postal Service is encouraging people to vote for their favorite "Simpsons" character on its Web site (http://www.usps.com). Fans also can preorder the 44-cent first-class stamps on the site and register for a sweepstakes for a limited-edition "Simpsons" poster signed by Groening.

Elie Dekel, executive vice president at 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising, said the previously announced stamps are a key part of the show's 20th anniversary celebration. "'The Simpsons' is more than just a television show, it's an American institution," he said. "These stamps help solidify this legacy."

David Failor, U.S. Postal Service executive director of stamp services, also predicted a benefit for his organization. "Issuing 'The Simpsons' stamps, which includes known philatelist Bart Simpson, will serve as a great opportunity to interest youngsters in stamp collecting."

Hugh Jackman Heartbroken by Wolverine Leak

The reigning Sexiest Man Alive doesn't think what happened to his new movie is very sexy.

"It's a serious crime and there's no doubt it's very disappointing – I was heartbroken by it," Hugh Jackman said Wednesday about last week's Internet leak of a work print of his X-Men Origins: Wolverine. "Obviously people are seeing an unfinished film. It's like a Ferrari without a paint job."

While Wolverine is set for official release on May 1, its studio, 20th Century Fox, says the FBI and the Motion Picture Association of America were investigating who might have pirated it and have promised to prosecute the culprits.

As part of a world tour to promote the movie, Jackman, 40, previewed about 20 minutes to about 600 fans in Sydney, Australia, and said he didn't think the Web leak would harm eventual cinema attendance, the Associated Press reports. The star made his entrance from a helicopter – and then to the ground on an aerial wire.

Britney Spears Walks Off Stage During Concert

The show didn't go on in Vancouver Wednesday night after Britney Spears pulled the plug on her sold-out Circus concert 15 minutes and three songs into her performance – departing the stage and leaving the audience in the GM Place in the dark for more than half an hour. Boos ensued.

Cigarette smoke from the crowd was blamed, with a female voice announcing to the crowd, "The building is awfully smoky. It is uncomfortable for everyone on stage, including Ms. Spears. Please extinguish all cigarettes – this is a non-smoking building, and the show will resume when the smoke on the stage is cleared," the Vancouver Sun reports.

Until the agitated crowd settled down, GM Place was filled with piped-in intermission music played at hockey games – which, one concertgoer told PEOPLE, left the fans "really pissed off. The break in the concert ruined it for everyone. The vibe was gone."

When she did return, Spears, 27, delivered a well-received Bollywood take on "Me Against the Music," followed by "Everytime" – during which she asked the crowd "What's up, Vancouver?" before she again left the stage, some 90 seconds before the end of the song.

The concert concluded with Spears singing "Womanizer" and advising the still-restless crowd, "Vancouver, don't smoke weed." Her sign-off was also peppered with a couple of X-rated expletives and a warning to "drive safe."

After the show, a statement was posted on the singer's Web site: "We want to apologize to all the fans who attended our Vancouver show tonight for the brief pause in Britney's set. Crew members above the stage became ill due to a ventilation issue."

Spears kicked off her Circus tour of the North America and England in New Orleans on March 3. Her father and attorneys are exploring the possibility of expanding the tour, says AP.

Beatles' catalog will be reissued Sept. 9 in remastered versions

Nearly a quarter-century after the Beatles and digital technology came together at the dawn of the CD era, the Fab Four's entire recorded legacy is getting a major sonic overhaul that is widely considered long overdue. All of the group's studio recordings will be reissued Sept. 9 in remastered versions and are expected to generate renewed excitement about the Beatles' blue-chip catalog and pump millions of dollars into a beleaguered music industry.

The upgraded editions come long after many other classic rock groups' recordings have been updated two and three times since CDs were introduced in 1983. All of the music will be released on CDs -- with plans for digital distribution still being worked on -- on the same day "The Beatles: Rock Band" edition of the popular video game series premieres, bringing the group and its music in front of new listeners in a dramatic new form.

"It has been a long time coming," said Martin Lewis, a Beatles scholar who was U.S. marketing strategist for the 1994 "Live at the BBC" album and the three volumes of the "Anthology" series that followed. "The Beatles are the only artists that can get away with having such a long delay in remastering their catalog.

"But however frustrated fans may be for the 22-year wait since their music first appeared on CD, they're not going to be disappointed in the results," said Lewis, who is not directly involved in this project but who has heard some of the recordings at EMI Music's Abbey Road Studios in London, where the remastering project has been underway for four years.

All 12 studio albums will be reissued in their original U.K. configurations, with original album artwork and liner notes, as well as new essays, detailed historical notes, rare photos, previously unreleased studio chat among the band members and other extras. Apple Corps, the record company the Beatles established in their final years together, and EMI Music, which owns their recordings, announced the release Tuesday.

Those recordings have continued to sell strongly and attract new generations of fans long after the quartet disbanded in 1970. Since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking retail sales in 1991, more than 57 million Beatles albums have sold in the U.S. In 2008, 1.4 million copies were sold, according to SoundScan.

But EMI and Apple have taken criticism for taking so long in getting the remasters out, especially when the health of the CD format is in question.

"There will be cynics who will point quite accurately to the vanishing CD marketplace," Lewis said. "There's no doubt it will not do as spectacularly well as had they reissued them in 2001 in the wake of the '1' [hits compilation] album, which has sold 31 million copies worldwide and 8 million in the U.S. But any cynics who say the Beatles have missed the boat will be wrong. This will sell exceedingly well and will be a huge boost to the recorded music industry.

"And if the CD is going to die," he said, "the Beatles are going to give it a superb wake."

In addition to taking advantage of technological advances in sound reproduction, the CDs will be embedded with a short documentary film about the making of each album "for a limited period," the statement said, without detailing what quantity or time period that entails. The CDs will be available individually or as part of a new boxed set including extras; no price details were given.

Several of the group's earliest recordings have never been issued in stereo on CD, and the new versions will represent the debut of the full catalog in stereo. "Magical Mystery Tour," which was issued in England as an extended play disc with six songs, then expanded into a full album for its U.S. release, will also be included in the full album configuration, as it appeared when the original CDs came out in 1987.

A second boxed set, "The Beatles in Mono," will bring together the monaural mixes of the albums. All Beatles albums before 1969's "Abbey Road" were intended by the group and longtime producer George Martin to be heard in mono.

"Hopefully this will bring to the attention of Beatles fans just how important those mono mixes are," said Chris Carter, host of the long-running "Breakfast With the Beatles" weekly radio show, now on KLOS-FM and Sirius/XM. "The mono mixes of those LPs is the way the Beatles themselves intended you to hear those albums. The stereo mixes were usually done as an afterthought by second engineers without any Beatles present.

"Without getting too technical, for the Beatle fan who has listened to the stereo albums for the last 30 or 40 years, the mono mixes actually have noticeably different bits musically."

In recent years, surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as others within the Beatles camp have said there were no plans for remastering the music. The secrecy is consistent with the privacy with which all matters relating to the Beatles are guarded within Apple and EMI. However, McCartney has said that he expects the band's music to become available digitally this year. The Beatles catalog is considered the most significant body of music still not available for downloading.

In addition, Capitol Records, the Beatles' U.S. record label, recently has been expanding its series of vintage albums reissued on vinyl, and many within the Beatles community expect the group's remastered albums also will appear in that configuration as well. A spokesman for the group said Tuesday that no one from the band or the record label would be available to comment beyond the information in the news release.

Even though the recordings are not being completely remixed the way the "Love" soundtrack from the Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas was, consumers should expect a significant improvement in sound quality from the remastering process, historian Lewis said.

"If people are listening to their music through iPods or cellphones, they may not hear much difference," Lewis said. "But on something as sonically superb as what the Beatles and George Martin created, it needs a physical carrier equal to that, and the [sound] files you can get on a CD are of a quality you can't get on MP3.

"This music was recorded with what we could think of today as Neanderthal caveman conditions. But the actual recording work done by the Beatles and their two main engineers, Norman Smith and Geoff Emerick, is absolutely remarkable. . . .

"The Beatles catalog is the Rolls-Royce of contemporary music, and every indication is that they've spared no expense," Lewis said. "We can be disappointed or bemoan the fact that it's taken 22 years, but from what we're hearing, it appears they have done it right."

Chris Brown And Rihanna Fans React To Not-Guilty Plea

On Monday in a Los Angeles courtroom, Chris Brown pleaded not guilty to two felony charges of assault and making criminal threats, charges stemming from his alleged altercation with girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of this year's Grammy Awards.

Since it happened back in February, fans have reacted with mixed feelings to the various stages of the incident, and Brown's not-guilty plea is no different. Most fans think he made the wrong decision. "I don't think that that's right. I think he should [plead guilty]," Brandi Crosmer told MTV News. "You should take responsibility for your actions."

Many, like Crosmer, feel that Brown is using his fame to get out of trouble. "It's disappointing that this is even happening," Jennifer Weber said. "Chris Brown is looked up to by a lot of people."

Weber also added that if she was Rihanna, she'd feel "heartbroken" about the whole incident and that by pleading not guilty it would be like "you never knew him. If he's going to go back on what he used to say and he's not even going to be able to own up then you feel like you didn't know him in the first place."

Most guys thought he should "man up" and admit to the alleged incident. "He should go to prison if that's what he did," Aaron McClanahan said. Christian Ortiz and Nicholas Esterez added, "It's the kind of thing that people with money and status can do ... I really think he should have pleaded guilty. He should probably serve some time for doing what he did."

Athena Reich added that if Brown is using a not-guilty plea as part of a plea deal, "Then that's a play and he's not being honest in court. It would be better if he could just be honest. My gut reaction is that it's kind of sad that people can't be honest." She continued, "I would run [if I were Rihanna]. I would run away. I would take off my high heels and run."

Most of the women MTV News talked to about the plea felt similarly to Reich, saying that if they were Rihanna they'd definitely be upset with Brown. "I'd be angry, 'cause it's not fair," Alex Bertie said. "Just 'cause he's famous doesn't mean he should get away with it." Her friend, Nadine Oakes, added, "I wanna see him go down."

Brown is next due in court on April 29.

'Fast' flick revs up 'Furious' 72.5M biz at box office

"Fast & Furious" streaked off the starting line during its opening weekend, reaching the No. 1 spot at the box office with high-octane ticket sales that hit $72.5 million in three days.

The hot-rod flick fueled by Paul Walker and Vin Diesel sped by the No. 2 "Monsters vs. Aliens" as it stole honors as the best opening of the year.

Critics, who had panned "Fast & Furious" as a wreck, were stunned by its big-money debut - especially since Diesel and Walker had hardly lit up the box office in recent years.

In just one weekend, "Fast & Furious" earned more than the 2006 installment of the racing franchise, "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift."

"The marketing of this movie was also brilliant because it emphasized the reunited cast and it's an action film with fast cars, good-looking women and attractive men," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office watchdog Media By Numbers.

"Monsters vs. Aliens" slipped out of first place with sales of $33.5 million in its second week and "The Haunting in Connecticut" scared up $9.6 million to land at No. 3.

Nicolas Cage's action movie "Knowing" followed in fourth place with a take of $8.1 million and the Paul Rudd comedy "I Love You, Man" was No. 5 with $7.9 million in sales.

The top 10 boasted two other new entries. Teen comedy "Adventureland" was No. 6 with sales of $6 million and the crime-scene cleanup comedy "Sunshine Cleaning" rose to No. 10 with sales of $1.9 million in its fourth week.

"Duplicity," a Clive Owens and Julia Roberts thriller, earned $4.3 million and the seventh spot in its fifth week.

The Disney family movie "Race to Witch Mountain" was in eighth place with sales of $3.4 million and "12 Rounds" landed ninth with $2.3 million in sales.

Overall, the box office was up a whopping 68% from the weekend last year, when holdover "21" outplayed a number of weak new movies.
